Puerto Vallarta + Nuevo Vallarta/Nuevo Nayarit

Nuevo Vallarta, now officially named Nuevo Nayarit, and Puerto Vallarta offer two distinctly different Vidanta resort experiences connected by the broader geography of Banderas Bay.

One region · Two resort settings

Why we group them

Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta share Banderas Bay, the Puerto Vallarta airport gateway, climate, and many regional activities. Travelers can enjoy the same broader coastline while choosing between very different resort environments.

Puerto Vallarta is in Jalisco; Nuevo Vallarta—also called Nuevo Nayarit—is across the state line in Nayarit. They should not be treated as the same resort.

What to plan around

  • Which resort location better matches the trip you want
  • Airport transportation and travel time between areas
  • Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón, historic neighborhoods, dining, and galleries
  • Nuevo Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit coastline
  • Bay excursions, seasonal activities, and time away from the resort
Puerto Vallarta

A city-side experience with easier access to Puerto Vallarta’s urban energy, restaurants, waterfront, and cultural life.

Nuevo Vallarta

A larger resort-area experience in Nayarit, with a different scale, layout, and relationship to the surrounding Riviera Nayarit communities.

Eddie’s Place Nopal Beach

A long-running Nuevo Vallarta restaurant serving Mexican food and seafood. Some owners report walking there from the Vidanta resort area along the beach. Beach access and conditions can change, so confirm the route with the resort and restaurant before attempting it. Check current details.

Mexican Caribbean

Riviera Maya

Caribbean water, tropical landscape, and access to coastal towns, cenotes, and Maya cultural sites.

Quintana Roo

Understand the setting

Riviera Maya is a coastal region rather than a single city. The Vidanta resort experience is designed to feel self-contained, while the surrounding region offers an entirely different layer of the trip. Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, cenotes, reefs, and Maya cultural sites may all be part of the same vacation—but they are not right outside your room.

Decide early whether you want a mostly resort-centered stay or whether off-property exploration is a priority. That choice should shape your transportation, schedule, and accommodation research.

What to plan around

  • Airport choice, ground transportation, and transfer time
  • The size of the resort and the time needed to move between areas
  • Which pools, restaurants, entertainment, and amenities are included with your accommodation
  • Advance planning for popular dining, shows, golf, or excursions
  • Seasonal beach, weather, and seaweed conditions
  • Enough unscheduled time to enjoy the resort itself
Stay resort-centered

A good fit for travelers who want pools, dining, entertainment, and relaxation in one large resort environment without building a full sightseeing itinerary.

Use it as a regional base

A good fit for travelers who also want Playa del Carmen, cenotes, snorkeling, eco-parks, or Maya cultural sites—provided travel time and transportation are planned in advance.

JOYÀ at Vidanta Riviera Maya

Cirque du Soleil’s resident dinner-and-show experience is presented at the on-site Vidanta theater. Ticket packages, performance dates, dining options, and transportation arrangements vary, so reserve separately and in advance. See current JOYÀ details.

Xcaret + México Espectacular

Xcaret combines nature, activities, and Mexican cultural experiences, followed by its large nighttime production, Xcaret México Espectacular. A full-day visit can run late, so confirm admission, show inclusion, and round-trip transportation before booking. Review the night show.

Chichén Itzá + cenote tour

This is generally a long, full-day excursion. Many tours pair the archaeological site with a cenote swim and meal. Compare pickup location, total travel time, guide credentials, included admission, and what to bring before selecting a tour. Check official site information.

Isla Mujeres

Known for Caribbean water, beaches, and a relaxed island day, Isla Mujeres requires travel north and a ferry or organized excursion. Consider the full door-to-door travel time—not just the ferry—when deciding whether it fits your stay.

Baja California Sur

Los Cabos + East Cape

Two Vidanta settings on the Sea of Cortez with very different relationships to the surrounding area.

One region · Two distinct stays

Do not treat them as the same location

Vidanta Los Cabos is on the San José del Cabo side of the wider Los Cabos region. It is a smaller, luxurious property with a more adult-forward feel, fewer kid-focused activities than the larger Vidanta destinations, and a more connected setting near restaurants, shopping, and entertainment.

Vidanta East Cape is a separate, secluded destination farther along the Sea of Cortez. East Cape is The Estates only: an exclusive luxury experience designed around space, privacy, and seclusion. It is car-dependent, so confirm accommodation availability and transportation before building a trip around it.

What to plan around

  • Flights through Los Cabos International Airport and transportation to the correct resort
  • Whether you want walkable activity or a secluded, car-dependent retreat
  • Whether the smaller, adult-forward Los Cabos property suits everyone in your group
  • Driving time between San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, and East Cape
  • Advance reservations for popular restaurants, excursions, golf, and seasonal activities
  • Beach safety—the San José del Cabo resort beach is beautiful, but strong surf and riptides make it unsuitable for swimming
Vidanta Los Cabos · San José del Cabo

Luxurious, beautiful, smaller, and more adult-forward. It is the more walkable and connected choice, but it offers fewer children’s activities than larger Vidanta destinations. Enjoy the beach for scenery and walking; use the pools rather than entering the ocean.

Vidanta East Cape · The Estates only

Luxury, exclusivity, space, and seclusion define this setting. Plan on having a car or arranging transportation; this is not the location for stepping outside and walking to a variety of nearby places.

Sunset Monalisa

Our highly recommended special-occasion restaurant for dramatic sunset views and a memorable dinner. It is a drive from the San José del Cabo resort area, so make a reservation timed for sunset and arrange round-trip transportation in advance.

Historic San José del Cabo

The historic center offers galleries, restaurants, local culture, and walkable streets. The seasonal Thursday Art Walk is a popular evening option; verify current dates and transportation before planning around it. Explore San José del Cabo.

Cabo San Lucas

For the marina, Land’s End, boat excursions, and a livelier scene, plan a separate trip along the Tourist Corridor. It is part of Los Cabos, but it is not the same town or resort setting as San José del Cabo.

East Cape exploration

The East Cape stretches from San José del Cabo toward Cabo Pulmo and is known for remote shoreline, desert scenery, and marine environments. Distances can be substantial and road conditions vary, so research the exact outing and transportation before leaving the resort. Review the East Cape region.

Sonora · Sea of Cortez

Puerto Peñasco · Rocky Point

An approachable international beach road trip from the Southwest—desert meeting sea rather than a tropical resort setting.

Road-trip destination

Understand the vibe

Puerto Peñasco, widely known as Rocky Point, can be an easy and comparatively affordable beach escape for travelers from Arizona and the surrounding Southwest. Allow roughly four hours from Phoenix and five from Tucson, with actual travel time depending on traffic, the border crossing, and your starting point.

This is not tropical Mexico. The appeal is the Sonoran Desert meeting the Sea of Cortez: broad views, dramatic tides, pools, golf, seafood, and a relaxed road-trip rhythm. If that is your vibe, Puerto Peñasco can be a terrific getaway.

What to plan around

  • Passport requirements, Mexican auto insurance, border hours, and current road guidance
  • Having a car for the resort, town, shopping, and local attractions
  • Very hot summer temperatures and strong sun exposure
  • Tide and beach conditions, which can change the shoreline experience significantly
  • The distance between Vidanta Puerto Peñasco and activities in town
  • Seasonal market dates and limited operating hours for smaller attractions
Why people love it

It combines an international beach trip with the simplicity of driving from the Southwest. The Grand Mayan resort setting adds pools, a lazy river, golf, and room to slow down.

Know what it is

Come for desert-and-sea scenery, relaxed days, and a regional road trip—not for lush tropical landscaping or the dense activity of a major resort corridor.

Mermaid’s Market

Our top local draw: a seasonal open-air market featuring artists, craftspeople, food, and community atmosphere. It is generally held on selected Saturdays from mid-October through May, so confirm the current calendar before making it part of your trip. Check current market updates.

Cholla Bay Mall

A casual local shopping area—also commonly called Cholla Mall—for browsing crafts, souvenirs, shell art, and small vendors. Shops and hours can vary, so treat it as an exploratory stop rather than a conventional mall visit.

The Seashell Museum

A small, distinctive collection connected to the region’s shells and marine environment. Availability can be seasonal or appointment-based; verify the current schedule before driving over.

Puerto Peñasco town

Leave time for seafood, the waterfront, small shops, and the local character beyond the resort. A car makes it much easier to experience both Vidanta and Rocky Point during the same stay.

Sinaloa · Pacific Mexico

Mazatlán

An authentic coastal city with historic architecture, local culture, family-friendly beaches, and some of Mexico’s best-known seafood traditions.

Culture · Value · Beach

Understand the vibe

Mazatlán feels like a real Mexican city that also happens to be a beach destination. It is more historic, lived-in, and culturally layered—and generally less curated and glossy—than newer resort corridors. For many travelers, that authenticity is the reason to choose it.

It can also be one of the more budget-friendly Vidanta destinations. Mayan Palace Mazatlán is positioned as a family-ready resort, with pools, beach access, and activities, while the city adds architecture, music, seafood, markets, and long stretches of waterfront beyond the property.

What to plan around

  • How much time you want in the resort versus Centro Histórico and the waterfront
  • Transportation between the Mayan Palace property, the Malecón, and historic Mazatlán
  • Current beach and swimming conditions for your chosen area
  • Heat, humidity, and strong midday sun
  • Family interests, since the destination offers both resort activities and city exploration
  • Room in the itinerary for seafood, markets, plazas, architecture, and evening street life
Why people choose it

Mazatlán offers strong vacation value without stripping away local character. It works especially well for travelers who want beaches and a resort base but also care about Mexican culture, history, food, and everyday city life.

Know what it is

This is a more textured, less polished destination than a purpose-built luxury corridor. Come for authenticity, affordability, family-friendly fun, and the pleasure of exploring—not for a sealed-off resort bubble.

The Malecón

Mazatlán’s roughly 13-mile oceanfront promenade is a defining part of the city. Use it for walking, views, monuments, beach access, people-watching, and understanding how the historic center, Olas Altas, and newer hotel areas connect along the coast.

Stone Island · Isla de la Piedra

Take a short water taxi across for a relaxed beach day with calm sandy stretches, horseback riding, and fresh seafood served near the shore. Confirm the launch point, return schedule, sea conditions, and activity arrangements before heading over.

Centro Histórico

Explore restored architecture, plazas, galleries, the cathedral, restaurants, and the evening atmosphere around Plazuela Machado. This is where Mazatlán’s history and cultural personality are most visible.

Seafood + local flavor

Shrimp, ceviche, grilled fish, and casual seafood meals are central to the Mazatlán experience. Leave the resort for at least one locally chosen meal, and verify recommendations close to your travel dates.

Guerrero · Pacific Mexico

Acapulco

Retro-chic Golden Age glamour, dramatic Pacific views, and the lively, resilient energy of one of Mexico’s most storied beach cities.

History · Energy · Pacific views

Understand the vibe

Acapulco carries the memory of its Golden Age, when Hollywood stars, international travelers, cliff divers, and glamorous nightlife made the bay legendary. That history still shapes the destination, but today’s Acapulco is also unmistakably Mexican: lively, colorful, family-oriented, and full of local beach-resort energy.

The city continues its visible recovery following Category 5 Hurricane Otis, which struck in October 2023. Hotels, attractions, businesses, and public spaces have steadily reopened and renewed, but recovery is still ongoing and conditions can vary by area. Vidanta Acapulco offers both The Grand Mayan and Mayan Palace, with pools, lazy rivers, an aqua park, golf, and activities for adults and children.

What to plan around

  • Which part of the bay and which resort area best fit the trip you want
  • Current operating status for hotels, attractions, roads, and local businesses
  • Transportation between Vidanta, the historic bay, La Quebrada, and other city sights
  • Beach and swimming conditions at the specific location you plan to visit
  • Heat, humidity, traffic, and travel time across the city
  • Balancing pool and resort time with Acapulco’s history, nature, and nightlife
Why people choose it

Few destinations combine cinematic history, steep green hills, sweeping Pacific views, city energy, and classic Mexican beach culture in quite the same way.

Travel with current information

Acapulco’s recovery is real and continuing. Verify current conditions and operating details close to your trip, and expect a destination that is evolving rather than frozen in its Golden Age.

La Quebrada cliff divers

Watching Acapulco’s cliff divers launch into the narrow ocean inlet is the city’s signature experience. Confirm current performance times, viewing options, transportation, and weather conditions before going.

Laguna de Tres Palos eco tour

Explore a coastal lagoon environment known for mangroves, birdlife, local fishing culture, and small-boat tours. Choose a reputable operator and confirm pickup, tour length, weather, wildlife conditions, and what is included.

Acapulco Historical Museum · Fort San Diego

Set inside the star-shaped Fuerte de San Diego, the museum provides essential context for Acapulco’s role in Pacific trade, maritime history, and the cultural exchange between Mexico and Asia. Verify current museum hours before visiting.
